Gunnar Hede in Selma Lagerlöf's "A Saga of the Manor" hopefully had warm mittens with sturdy cuffs as extra protection against wind and swirling snow in the spruce forest. (The crossed stitch pattern is also a stylized spruce.) The mittens are identical, so you can just put them on, but it is still possible to get a comfortable fit with a thumb gusset on the side and asymmetrical decreases.
